We understand community building as the process of not only supporting people with migration and refugee experiences, but also actively integrating them into society. Our approach aims to activate people in different areas of life, give them a voice and strengthen their self-determination.
We promote collaborative learning that takes place both within and through the community. The focus is on shared responsibility, which strengthens togetherness in the learning process and enables social participation. For us, community education means designing educational processes in such a way that they break down barriers and create spaces for encounters in which people can exercise their rights and shape their lives in a self-determined way.
Migrant and refugee families, especially Kurdish families, are a particular target group. Our work with families focuses on strengthening their self-determination, networking and social participation. The parent community plays a key role in this, as it promotes joint learning and mutual support. Our aim is not only to support parents and children in existing structures, but also to empower them to actively change them and improve their living conditions in a self-determined way.
Through practice-oriented workshops, projects and dialog formats, we not only promote the acquisition of knowledge, but also the development of skills that enable participants to participate confidently and actively in their new environment.
Our “Participation and Community Building” department works closely with other areas of Yekmal e.V., including family support, the Pîya daycare center, the Yekmal Academy and the Center for Intersectional Diversity. This collaboration enables us to develop holistic approaches and provide comprehensive support for families and individuals who want to strengthen their participation in society.
