Child and youth welfare

Child and youth welfare in Germany is regulated in the German Social Code (SGB VIII) and includes a wide range of measures and services aimed at promoting the well-being of children and young people and supporting their development. The area of child and youth welfare is divided into inpatient and outpatient services.

Since 2015, we have been involved in a broad range of child and youth welfare services in Berlin. Our support services are aimed at all families, children and young people living in Berlin, regardless of their migration or refugee experience. We offer our services in various languages such as German, Kurdish, Turkish, Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Russian and Albanian. As a social work organization with an intercultural approach, our goal is to mediate between different values, traditions, identities and educational styles and to create bridges for change processes in the sense of § 1 SGB VIII.

We have also been active in other federal states since 2021. In Bremen, the outpatient branch of the department has already been set up and started work. We are currently in the process of setting up in NRW and Rhineland-Palatinate.

Child and youth welfare services in accordance with SGB VIII pursue the overarching goal of ensuring the well-being of children and young people and promoting their development. Both preventative and interventional measures are used to meet the different needs of young people.

Participation

A central concern of child and youth welfare is the participation of children and young people. They should be actively involved in decisions that affect them. This not only promotes self-confidence, but also encourages them to take responsibility for their own lives.

Interdisciplinary cooperation

Child and youth welfare services often work on an interdisciplinary basis with other specialist areas, such as schools, health services or the police. This networking is important in order to find holistic solutions to complex problems.

Quality development

The quality of child and youth welfare services is ensured through regular evaluations and further training measures. Specialists are required to undergo continuous further training in order to meet changing requirements.

Funding

Child and youth welfare services are mainly financed by public funds (federal government, federal states, local authorities).

Overall, child and youth welfare services play a crucial role in society by helping to ensure that children and young people can grow up in a safe environment and receive the support they need. Outpatient and inpatient services are used to find individual solutions and promote the long-term well-being of young people.
